Start from your list, not from the exam
People choose an exam and then find institutions that take it. That is backwards, and it is why so much preparation goes into a test that does not open the doors someone actually wanted.
- Write down eight to twelve institutions you would genuinely attend.
- For each, open its admissions page and note which tests it accepts.
- Count which tests appear most often across your list.
- Prepare for those. Ignore the rest.
This takes an afternoon and it replaces months of second-guessing. It also tends to reveal that the list needs two tests rather than one, or that a test everybody talks about opens none of the doors on it.

Two structural points worth knowing. CAT is accepted far beyond the IIMs — a good score is useful across a wide range of institutions. And several tests run more than once a year, which changes how a missed attempt feels.
Exact acceptance, weightings and windows change between sessions, so treat this as the map and each institution's own admissions page as the territory.
How many to sit
Two, in most cases. Three if your list is genuinely spread.
One is fragile — a single bad morning ends the cycle. Four or more splits preparation across different formats and tends to lower every score. Two well-chosen tests covering most of your list is the sensible middle, and the second one is insurance rather than a second full preparation.
Choose the second for coverage, not for difficulty. The purpose is to reach institutions the first does not, or to have a second attempt at the same ones.

Which MBA entrance exam is best?
There is no best exam in the abstract. The right one is whichever the institutions on your shortlist accept — so build the shortlist first and read acceptance off it.
Is CAT only for the IIMs?
No. CAT is conducted by the IIMs but its score is accepted by a very large number of other institutions, which is why it is useful well beyond an IIM application.
How many entrance exams should I take?
Two for most people, three if your shortlist is spread across institutions that accept different tests. One is fragile; four or more splits preparation and usually lowers every score.
Can I get an MBA admission without any entrance exam?
Yes, for a large number of programmes. Many private universities, distance and online programmes and autonomous institutes admit on qualifying marks or profile review instead.
Do state-level tests only work in that state?
Broadly yes — they feed that state's counselling seats. Some institutions accept them alongside national tests, so check the acceptance list of anything on your shortlist.
